Hob, a free open-source desktop app, runs open-weight AI models on your own computer

144 → 195stars (saves) on GitHub in 8 habout 6.4× the typical pace of other tracked GitHub repos

Hob is a free, MIT-licensed desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux, made by Frigade. It runs open-weight models, currently Gemma 4 and gpt-oss, on your own machine and works offline. Per its listing, it is a private alternative to Claude and ChatGPT.

The repo went from 144 to 195 stars (saves) on GitHub in 8 hours - about 6.4 times the typical pace of other repos SteadyVane tracks on GitHub. A Show HN post about it has 147 upvotes on Hacker News.

Why it matters: If you want AI help with files or documents that should stay on your own computer, a local app that picks a model to fit your hardware removes the usual setup work. Whether the local models are good enough for your tasks is a thing to test.

Local and private is the pitch. Whether it is good enough for your work is the test.

A free VS Code extension lets GitHub Copilot Chat use OpenAI, Ollama, Anthropic and Gemini providers

112,527 → 121,789installs in 35.8 days · 39 commentsabout 53× the typical pace of other tracked VS Code extensions

OAI Compatible Provider for Copilot, by Johnny Zhao, is a free, MIT-licensed extension that brings OpenAI, Ollama, Anthropic and Gemini API providers into GitHub Copilot Chat. It needs VS Code 1.104.0 or higher and an API key from an OpenAI-compatible provider.

The extension gained 9,262 installs in 858 hours - about 53 times the typical pace of other extensions SteadyVane tracks on the VS Code Marketplace. It stands at 121,789 installs with a 5.0 rating from 39 reviews.

Why it matters: It lets you choose your own model behind the Copilot chat you already use, rather than switching editors. One catch: a third-party guide says it needs a GitHub Copilot Individual subscription and does not support Business or Enterprise users.

Bring your own model, keep your editor. Check the subscription catch first.

OpenAI releases GPT-6.1 Terra, a faster, cheaper model for computer use, visual reasoning and writing

77 → 594upvotes on Hacker News in 16 h · 377 commentsabout 18× the typical pace of other tracked Hacker News stories

GPT-6.1 Terra is a fast, efficient OpenAI model combining visual reasoning, precise computer use and more natural writing, described as a significant step up from GPT-5.6 Terra. It is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and through the API as gpt-6.1-terra.

The announcement went from 77 to 594 upvotes on Hacker News in 16 hours - about 18 times the typical pace of other stories SteadyVane tracks on Hacker News. It has 377 comments.

Why it matters: API pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, versus $2 and $12 for GPT-5.6 Terra, so bills for existing workloads could fall. OpenAI itself still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra for the most complex coding.

Cheaper is useful. OpenAI's own caveat says where it stops.
