What each AI coding tool gained in the week of Oct 21 – 27, 2026, measured by SteadyVane from its own readings: the stars (saves) of the open-source tools on GitHub, the installs of the coding extensions in VS Code, and the week's new items that name each tool.
GitHub stars (saves) gained
The open-source coding tools' repos on GitHub: the stars (saves) each one gained in the week, and the % of its count at the week's start.
Gemini CLI's own README says that for unpaid-tier and Google One users it was replaced by Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026; its stars (saves) are counted as for every other repo.
A mention is a new item of the week - first read by SteadyVane that week - whose title names the tool: on Hacker News (its front page, new, Show and Ask lists - not the items found only by SteadyVane's keyword searches there, which include "Claude", "GPT" and "Anthropic"), on YouTube (videos recorded under its searches "AI tools", "AI agents", "AI coding agent", "AI automation workflow" and "AI productivity" - not those recorded only under its searches for "ChatGPT", "Claude AI" and "Gemini AI": see the note below), on Product Hunt and among new AI repositories on GitHub. A title that comes more than once from the same source among the week's new items counts once. A title that names a tool in one of the forms SteadyVane counts as unambiguous (such as "Claude Code", "Replit" or "opencode") counts as it is; any other match of a tool's name (such as "Codex", "Cursor", "Lovable" or "Zed") is checked first by a model (Claude Haiku 5.5) for whether, in that title, it is the tool (or its maker, by the same name) and not another meaning of the word; items the rest of the site leaves out (videos whose views looked paid for, a sponsor, a referral or affiliate link or a promo code in a video's description, items not in English) are not counted. An item naming two tools counts for each; the % is each tool's share of all the mentions counted that week.
The YouTube count leans against OpenAI's, Anthropic's and Google's tools: each time SteadyVane reads YouTube it records one search per video - the first in its list that found it - and its searches for "ChatGPT", "Claude AI" and "Gemini AI" come before four of the five searches above, so a video one of them also found counts only when the search "AI tools" found it too.
Items of the week (as the mentions above) from Hacker News, Product Hunt and new GitHub repositories - not YouTube - whose own title reports, as a fact, a change to an AI tool's or AI model's price, plan, usage limit or availability for its users in general (all of them, a whole plan or tier, a whole country or region, or every customer of a reseller): one announced ahead as decided, a temporary offer, a change to a reseller's or host's own price, a new plan or a model added to one, and a change users report count; one company's own rule or deal, a question or a rumour, and the launch of a new tool, model or product do not. Checked by a model (Claude Sonnet 5.5); each quoted in its source's own words: SteadyVane does not check whether what a title says is true. At most 3, the biggest for its source first. Read each one at its source.
The other AI tools on SteadyVane's watch list
Not coding tools, so not in the post: the other AI repositories on SteadyVane's watch list, by the stars (saves) each gained in the week (counted as above).
Not counted this week: microsoft/agent-framework: first read Oct 22: counted from the Nov 4 standings on; letta-ai/letta-code: first read Oct 22: counted from the Nov 4 standings on.
Continue: no longer actively maintained (its repository says so) (source)
Roo Code: its extension was shut down on May 15, 2026 (its repository says so) (source)
Supermaven: sunset by its makers in November 2025 (they recommend Cursor to its VS Code users) (source)
Gemini Code Assist: deprecated by Google: no new Standard or Enterprise subscriptions since October 9, 2026; Google points to Antigravity (source)
Amazon Q Developer: AWS ends support for its IDE plugins on April 30, 2027 (no new sign-ups since May 15, 2026) (source)
Onlook: its repository is the original open-source editor; Onlook's next product is a hosted tool in early access (its repository says so) (source)
Listings that do not count a tool's users (the tool itself may still be mentioned):
GitHub Copilot's VS Code extensions (GitHub.copilot): GitHub Copilot is built into VS Code since version 1.116 (April 2026): new users need no extension, so its extensions' installs no longer count its users (source)
Windsurf's plugin (Codeium.codeium): no longer published on the VS Code Marketplace; the Windsurf editor is an app of its own (source)
Tabnine's old plugin (TabNine.tabnine-vscode): its listing says Tabnine no longer offers it to new users (Tabnine for Enterprise is counted instead) (source)
Gemini CLI's VS Code companion (Google.gemini-cli-vscode-ide-companion): an add-on that needs Gemini CLI, not a tool of its own (source)
Blackbox AI's extension (Blackboxapp.blackboxagent): discontinued (Blackbox's own docs say so) and no longer published on the VS Code Marketplace (source)
Bolt's old repository (stackblitz/bolt.new): the open-source Bolt code, not the bolt.new product (its README says so) (source)
Extensions on SteadyVane's watch list that are not coding tools:
Azure MCP Server (ms-azuretools.vscode-azure-mcp-server): not a coding tool (source)
Foundry Toolkit for VS Code (ms-windows-ai-studio.windows-ai-studio): not a coding tool (source)
Repositories the other tables leave out:
FlowiseAI/Flowise: ended: its makers set its end of life for August 31, 2026, and its repository is archived (source)
microsoft/autogen: no longer maintained (its README says so) (source)
microsoft/semantic-kernel: now Microsoft Agent Framework, its successor (counted instead) (source)
modelcontextprotocol/servers: reference implementations, not meant for production (its README says so) (source)
letta-ai/letta: Letta's code now lives in letta-ai/letta-code (counted instead) (source)
How it is counted
The week is the 7 days to Wednesday 00:00, Denver time. SteadyVane reads every repository's stars (saves) on GitHub and every extension's installs on the VS Code Marketplace every 4 hours; a tool's gain is the difference between its readings nearest the week's start and end (each within 6 hours of it, the two no more than 4 hours more or less than the week apart). A reading lower than one before it is a stale count - the sources' servers do not all answer alike - and the highest count read so far stands for it. A count that went down by more than 2% between two readings - in one step or over several, from 48 hours before the week to 6 hours after it - leaves that listing out of the week, since its numbers cannot be compared; a listing first read after the week began is counted from the first whole week after. Tools with the same number share a rank. The image and the posts show each table's top 5 (a tie at 5th place whole, up to 7 rows); this page shows every row. Every listing was checked at its source on Oct 21, 2026.
